The Women Empowerment Cell (WEC) of Government Degree College for Women, Srikalahasti, was established with the aim of promoting gender equality, creating awareness among girl students on women’s rights, and empowering them socially, economically, and academically. The cell works actively to ensure a safe and supportive environment for all women on campus.
Objectives
- To create awareness among women students about their legal rights, health, and self-defence.
- To empower girl students to become confident, self-reliant, and socially responsible citizens.
- To organize seminars, workshops, and guest lectures on women’s issues and leadership.
- To address grievances and ensure gender sensitivity within the campus.
- To motivate students to participate in skill-development and entrepreneurship programmes.
Composition of the Cell
- Convener: A senior woman faculty member (nominated by the Principal)
- Members: Faculty representatives from various departments
- Student Representatives: Selected from each year/class
Activities and Initiatives
- Conducted Awareness Programmes on gender equality, health & hygiene, and women’s rights.
- Organized Self-defence Training and Legal Awareness Sessions in collaboration with local police and NGOs like Way foundation and Read india
- Observed International Women’s Day and National Girl Child Day with motivational talks and cultural activities.
- Arranged Workshops on Life Skills, Entrepreneurship, and Career Guidance for girl students.
- Encouraged participation in government initiatives such as Nai Chetna Campaign, Gender Sensitization Programs, and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao.
Outcomes
- Enhanced awareness among students regarding self-confidence, legal literacy, and personal safety.
- Improved participation of girl students in leadership roles and community outreach programmes.
- Promoted a gender-sensitive environment in the college.
Future Plans
- To establish a Counselling and Career Guidance Centre for Women.
- To collaborate with local women organizations and government agencies for capacity-building programmes.
- To initiate Skill-based Training Workshops for employability and entrepreneurship.
